Anxiety Disorder Treatment

Over 260 million Americans struggle with anxiety disorders. Anxiety triggers the fight – flight – freeze response in our bodies, which can wear down peoples’ bodies and minds when the response lasts for a significant time. La Ventana’s anxiety treatment centers in Thousand Oaks and Agoura Hills offer a variety of therapy types and medications to create individualized treatment plans for our clients to manage anxiety levels and the health complications that anxiety can cause.

Types of Anxiety Disorders

Although anxiety is a natural and occasionally beneficial response to situations and stressors, excess anxiety can jeopardize a client’s mental and physical health. Of the three most common anxiety disorders, two are associated with triggers or social situations.

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorders: The official diagnosis for generalized anxiety disorder is high levels of anxiety that interfere with daily tasks several days a week for at least six months. Symptoms associated with generalized anxiety disorders include excessive worry, fatigue, irritability, and muscle problems.
  • Panic Disorder: Panic disorders cause clients to suffer from brief, intense panic attacks which may either be triggered by specific stimuli or occur at intermittent intervals. Symptoms associated with panic attacks include sweating, heart palpitations, and difficulty breathing.
  • Phobia-Related Disorders: Phobia-related disorders are disproportionate responses to an object, scenario, or situation, such as heights, darkness, or large groups. Symptoms of phobia-related disorders include elevated anxiety and worrying.

Factors that Contribute to Anxiety Disorders:

Deducing the root of an anxiety disorder can be valuable information to create an individualized treatment plan to manage it. Contributing factors for anxiety disorders can be physical, emotional, or a combination of both. Common factors associated with anxiety disorders include:

  • Temperamental Traits: Certain socially related traits such as bashfulness or irritability can amplify the effects of anxiety disorders.
  • Exposure to Stressful Childhood Events: Incidents from clients’ pasts can be directly linked to present-day phobias and panic attacks.
  • Family History of Mental Illness: Many mental illnesses are heavily influenced by genetics. Having parents or grandparents with a history of anxiety disorders increases the likelihood that a client’s genetics are a contributing factor.
  • Physical Health Problems: Physical ailments such as malnutrition, hormonal imbalances, and substance abuse can trigger or worsen anxiety disorders.
