How do you tell the difference between sadness and depression? It’s not always easy to know, so keep in mind that if you or a loved one suspect you might be suffering from depression, please speak with a healthcare professional. Here are a couple of brief tips from Psychology Today on how to tell the difference between sadness and depression…
•	Sadness is usually triggered by a difficult event and is a passing mood – whereas depression is an abnormal emotional state
•	When a person is depressed, they feel sad about everything – it doesn’t require a trigger
•	Only a healthcare professional can properly diagnose depression
So, sadness is a normal emotion typically triggered by a one-time event - it is a passing emotional state that doesn’t have a lasting effect on your life …like a passing cloud. On the other hand, depression is an abnormal state that doesn’t need a “trigger”. It can seem to appear out of nowhere and stay for a much longer period, even years; and it is a state of mind that affects all aspects of your life. Depression can be like living inside a black cloud that isn’t leaving.
If you need guidance regarding sadness vs. depression, contact one of our Admissions Specialists who will be happy to answer your questions and provide the guidance you need.

"The Music Lab", aka Music in Mental Health and Substance Use Recovery, is our signature music program, created by professional musicians specifically for our clients. Where all of the wonder of music’s healing powers happens in our professional recording studio.

Many people recovering from addiction and /or mental health imbalances are often filled with shame and guilt and years of built-up emotions that prevent them from positively expressing themselves. Playing, writing, singing or simply listening to music helps participants cope with past emotional trauma and gives them a fire in their spirit that rekindles a lust for life and wellness.

Musical talent not required - just a curiosity and openness to transformation and healing.
