Panic Disorder Treatment

Panic disorders cause the client to have unpredictable panic attacks with symptoms including elevated heart rate, sweating, and difficulty concentrating. Though some panic attacks have tangible triggers, many begin and end with no indicators. La Ventana’s panic disorder treatment centers in Thousand Oaks and Agoura Hills can help clients diagnose and treat their panic disorders so they can resume their normal life activities.

What is a Panic Disorder?

A panic disorder is defined with the following criteria:

  • Panic attacks are frequent and unexpected.
  • The person has at least one month after a panic attack worrying about when the next panic attack will occur.
  • Panic attacks do not have a physical origin such as substance abuse.
  • Panic attacks are not caused by another mental disorder.

When left untreated, panic disorder can wreak havoc with a person’s life. The biggest risk is the onset of additional mental disorders such as phobias and depression. People with panic disorder may withdraw from social situations or from their jobs. And panic disorders can lead to dangerous behaviors such as substance abuse or suicidal tendencies.

Please note that our medical staff can treat clients with panic attacks even when they do not meet the medical definition of a panic disorder.

Factors That Contribute to Panic Attack

Many mental disorders have detectable root causes, and discovering these root causes assists in the formulation of an individualized care plan that can allow clients to manage their mental disorders. Common factors that can either trigger or exacerbate panic attacks include:

  • Heredity: Clients whose parents or grandparents have a history of panic attacks are more likely to develop panic attacks themselves.
  • External Stress and Trauma: Any situation which makes a client feel uncomfortable or ill at ease can lead to panic attacks. Traumatic situations such as abuse are likely root causes, though any significant life change – even perceivably beneficial changes such as marriages or a job promotion – can cause panic attacks as well.
  • Physical Health: Substance abuse can cause panic attacks. Some prescribed medications can also trigger panic attacks.
