Anxiety is a higher level of stress that might include several stressors all wrapped into one moment in time. Or, for some it’s a state of heightened vigilance that is always part of the background noise of daily life. There are many ways anxiety can manifest and many ways to alleviate that anxiety – one of them is through the practice of mindfulness.
The classic definition of mindfulness is that it is “paying attention on purpose in the present moment without judgement” – Jon Kabat Zinn. Another way of thinking about mindfulness is that it’s that quiet space between stimulus and response where you have the ability to make an intentional choice that reduces your anxiety.
One quick way of navigating through an anxious moment is to simply take a breath…a conscious breath. One where you are intentionally inhaling and exhaling while focusing on what it feels like to just breathe. Let go of your widescreen view of all the things that are happening in your life and narrow that view down, with a laser focus onto one breath in one moment.
Here’s how it’s done…
1)	Notice the sensation of inhaling to a count of 4
2)	Feel the breath slowly travel through your nostrils and into your diaphragm
3)	Feel your diaphragm expand
4)	Hold that breath for a count of two
5)	Then slowly exhale to a count of 6
6)	Feel the sensation of the exhale
7)	Feel your diaphragm contract
8)	Hold for a count of 2
9)	Repeat for a few breaths
This is not a cure for chronic anxiety but a mindfulness technique for lessening the “feelings” of anxiety in the moment, which typically results in a calming feeling.
If you are suffering from chronic or more severe anxiety and need help …contact our Admissions Specialists they will be happy to guide you through your journey to better mental health and wellness..

Three of our amazing women from La Ventana, Diahann Klein Chief Operating Officer, Sharon Volner Chief Clinical Officer / Black Belt in Hapkito Blend, and Jennifer Enriquez Clinical Director, recently spoke at a Malibu WAAT (Women’s Association for Addiction Treatment) on the topic of “Why Women Need to Get Physical”. They shared the benefits of embodied movement for women – specifically Martial Arts – and how it can help to heal trauma and improve mental health as women become more confident learning self-defense.
Our La Ventana Team believes passionately that “Empowered Women Empower Women” and when you combine that philosophy with martial arts the results can be life changing. Here are some great reasons to get physical:
•	Build confidence
•	Fight against stress and disease
•	Develop self-discipline
•	Learn self-respect
•	Develop awareness
•	Strengthen oneself mentally & emotionally
•	Develop a “Warrior Spirit”
•	Learn fellowship with others
Our women’s mental health programs were created by women, for women, to empower women… If you are a woman struggling with your mental health and you would like to learn more about our Women’s Mental Health programs led by an all-female staff contact us today. We can help!!

La Ventana Treatment Programs is and always has been LGBTQIA2+ affirming with allies. We are proud to serve and stand with this community at all times, but especially during Pride Month!
Together we celebrate the great strides that have taken place in civil rights, visibility of positive role models, and understanding of this diverse community. However, at the same time we share in their disappointment in the increase of discrimination and violence towards our LGBTQIA2+ neighbors.
In a recent GLAAD study seven in ten LGBTQ Americans reported personally experiencing discrimination, up 11% from a year ago and 24% from 2020. In addition, there have been over 200 bills proposed recently in state legislatures across the country targeting LGBTQ people and youth. It is this backslide that has contributed to an increase in trauma in this community and has taken a toll on the overall mental health of individuals.
According to NAMI, LGBTQ adults are more than twice as likely as heterosexual adults to experience a mental health condition and specifically, transgender individuals are nearly four times as likely to experience poor mental health. The youth suffer even more, experiencing twice the sadness and hopelessness of their cisgender peers, along with an increased risk for suicide.
If you or a loved one are a member of the LGBTQIA2+ community and are facing a mental health crisis, or experiencing trauma please call one of our Admissions Specialists and we will help you find the care and understanding you need.

“Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future…”
“In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. Sensitized to the conditions and experiences of others, only then can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society.” – www.juneteenth.com
We, at La Ventana, know that culture and history play an important role in one’s mental wellbeing. This also includes one’s daily experience of being a member of their own community in today’s world. In our individualized programs we address and incorporate one’s daily experience of “being” who they are, taking into consideration all of these factors and more. For more information on how culture, history and yes, one’s race affect mental health follow this link to NAMI’s most recent research on Black/African Americans and Mental Health. https://www.nami.org/Your-Journey/Identity-and-Cultural-Dimensions/Black-African-American
